Some rows do not extend across the whole width of the photograph, giving the appearance of 5 rows in the central area, 6 rows on either side, and 7 rows on the far left section. The half-dozen boys at the very back (with chimneys behind them) are deemed to be part of the top row. The 3rd row is deemed to be in two parts: the left part (boys) extends inward as far as the middle of the uniformed section; the right part (girls) extends inwards as far as the start of the uniformed section. The 4th row includes the uniformed boys, with shorter girls and boys standing to either side of them.
